Bloomington, IN–On March 15, 2014, TASUS Indiana & TGNA (Tsuchiya Group North America) employees participated in a charity 5K run/walk sponsored by the Bedford, Indiana Lion’s Club. Twenty-one employees came together to join in their cause, raising $462 to go towards the Lawrence County Blessings in a Backpack organization.
Thirty-five percent of TASUS Corporation’s workforce lives in Lawrence County. The Lion’s Club 5K was a perfect opportunity for TASUS to not only help support their employee’s communities, but to also work towards the initiatives that have been set through the Health & Wellness and Community Involvement TPS teams.
While most TASUS employees participating walked the event, there were some who ran and even won for their divisions. TASUS is proud of all employees who participated, but would like to give a special congratulations to those who trained and competed in the 5K. The top runner among the TASUS employees was Michael Majors. Michael won his division and placed 16th out of over 100 runners with his time of 24 minutes and 3 seconds. Skylar Cowden was the next fastest TASUS employee after finishing 3rd in his division and 24th overall with a time of 25 minutes and 7 seconds. Cassie Abrell and Rick Schmidt also had strong showings in the race as both finished in the top half of runners. Cassie placed 2nd in her group, winning a plaque to commemorate her efforts.
Why we chose this walk:
A majority of kids in the US are on the free and reduced meal programs. While they get a nutritious meal through the week, they may go hungry over the weekend. Blessings in a Backpack is a not-for-profit organization that sends backpacks full of food home with children throughout the school year. Items in the backpack include cereal, oatmeal, apples, granola bars, fruit cups, pretzels, and more. Blessings in a Backpack reports that a well-nourished child has better school attendance, behavior and health.
To help get involved, go to your local school to find out more information, or search for your area’s Blessings in a Backpack program on the web. (Some states and counties have different names for their programs.) Sponsorship per child for the entire school year is $80. Programs like this also take food donations and through volunteering your time. TASUS would like to encourage everyone to get involved today. If not with this program, then a program that more suits your interest. We can all help make a better tomorrow today.
